What should I be looking out for?
Moles on the skin are relatively common and in most cases will be completely harmless. However, it is important to be aware of the signs that may indicate a potential skin cancer. Any changes in the size, colour or shape of moles should be checked out by a medical professional.
A quick and easy way to remember what to look out for is to apply the ABCD rule.
Asymetry - A benign mole is symetrical - If you draw a line through the centre of a mole both sides should match (fig.A1). If the mole is Asymetrical, meaning that both side don't match then it could be a warning sign for melanoma and time to get it checked out by a GP or specialist (fig.A2).
